Kinkaku-ji - Kita Ward
京都市北区金閣寺町1
A temple of the Sojoji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism located in Kinkakuji-machi, Kita Ward, Kyoto City. It is commonly known as Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion Temple) due to the gold leaf covering the Shariden (relic hall), which is called the Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion). It is also registered as a component asset of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto'.
History
Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, established the Kitayama Villa on land he acquired from the Saionji family. After Yoshimitsu's death, the villa was converted into a temple, which is the current Rokuon-ji. The Shariden (relic hall), known as the Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion), is a representative architectural work of Kitayama culture. It was destroyed by arson in 1950 and rebuilt in 1955.
