Founded in 1596 CE (Keichō 1) with the founding abbot Matsudō Dai-ōjō (Great Elder Matsudō) and the founder Mōri Saburō-no-jō Minamoto no Hirotsugu. In 1891 CE (Meiji 24), the Nōbi earthquake caused the complete destruction of the various halls, leading to the reconstruction of the main hall in 1894 CE (Meiji 27). As the family temple of the Mōri clan, who were the feudal lords, the temple held a high status. Today, it preserves a palanquin granted by the Tokugawa family and statues carved by Enkū.
