Kirishima Jingu (Kirishima Grand Shrine)

Located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, this is the largest Grand Shrine in southern Kyushu. The enshrined deities (kami) include Ninigi-no-Mikoto (the primary deity of the descent of the heavenly grandchild) as the main deity, along with five other deities associated with the descent, such as Amaterasu-ōmikami and Konohanasakuya-hime-mikoto. Tradition holds that the shrine was founded in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. It was originally situated at the foot of Mount Takakibana in the Kirishima Mountains, a site believed to be the location of the descent of the heavenly grandchild. Due to repeated destruction by volcanic eruptions and subsequent relocations, the shrine was moved to its current location in 1484 CE (Bunmei 16). The current main hall (honden), offering hall (heiden), and worship hall (haiden) were constructed in 1715 CE (Kōtoku 5) through the donation of Shima Yoshitaka, the lord of the Satsuma Domain. In 2022 CE (Reiwa 4), these structures were designated as National Treasures. The vermilion-painted shrine buildings stand out against the deep greenery of the Kirishima Mountains, making it one of the most famous shrines in Kyushu.

History
Situated in a land known for the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandchild, the shrine enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu-ōmikami. It is renowned for its magnificent vermilion-painted shrine buildings and the natural scenery of the Kirishima mountain range.
