In 1522 CE, Juak, a monk of the Soto sect, established Entonji with the support of the Nanbu clan, revitalized Kishu Bodaiji, and converted it to the Soto sect. In 1871 CE, the administrative office of the Tonan Domain was established at the main temple, Entonji.
