In 788 CE (Enryaku 7), Ki Toyonaga built the current shrine structure on this site. In 1615 CE (Genna 1), the current main hall (honden) was constructed with the donation of Tosa-no-kami Naritsugu. In 1733 CE (Kyōhō 18), the Heiden (worship hall), Haiden (worship hall), and Kagura-den (Kagura Hall) were built with funding from Murakami Mitsuyoshi. During the Meiji era, the shrine was renamed 'Fuji-san Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji-take Shrine', and in 1946, it was renamed to its current name, 'Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Asama Shrine'.
