History
In 1897 CE (Meiji 30), Amaterasu-ōmikami was enshrined by Koizumi Masayasu of the 4th Battalion of the Settler Infantry, and the shrine was founded as a Kokutai (National Protection) Shrine. Subsequently, Sumiyoshi-ōkami was added as the ancestral deity of the pioneers. In 1921 CE (Taishō 10), it was designated as Nozokushi Shrine. In 1942 CE (Shōwa 17), it was ranked as a Gōsha (Prefectural Shrine) and renamed Kitami Shrine. In 1950 CE (Shōwa 25), Toyuke-hime was transferred to the shrine. In 1980 CE (Shōwa 55), the current main hall, built in the Shinkensha style, was completed.
