The temple was founded in 1812 (Bunka 9) when Priest Nichiro of Funzen-in established the hall within the grounds of Josei-ji Temple in Chojomachi. When Josei-ji Temple relocated due to war damage, Kiyomasa-kodo was rebuilt as a branch temple on the site of the former residence of the first-generation Yoshida Kanbei in Chojomachi. The first-generation Yoshida Kanbei was a village headman granted the privilege of using a surname and carrying swords for his achievements in land development, and he was the founder of Josei-ji Temple.
