Kodama Shrine
富士吉田市下吉田4丁目5−45
Located in Fujiyoshida City, this shrine is one of the Asama shrines known as a 'Shimo-miya' (lower shrine) dedicated to Mount Fuji. It preserves the ancient Fuji mountain beliefs that were deeply intertwined with the daily lives of local residents.
History
It is said that in 793 CE (Enryaku 12), Sakanoue no Tamuramaro performed a distant worship (Kouhai) of Mount Fuji to pray for victory in battle, and in 807 CE (Daitou 2), the shrine buildings were constructed. In the Meiji era, the Uwakita district, which had been part of the shrine's parishioner area, was ceded to Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Asama Taisha, and the shrine was renamed 'Komuro Asama Shrine.' It features the largest one-bay main hall (honden) in Yamanashi Prefecture and has long been revered as the tutelary deity (Ujigami) of the northern foothills region of Mount Fuji.
