It was established at the current site of Ryōgen Zenji in 1588 CE and moved to its present location in 1617 CE. Until the Meiji era, it served as a central temple (Chūhon-ji) for the Honganji sect in northern Yamato, fulfilling the role of a service temple (Yakuji).
