1344年ごろ、越中守護の桃井直常により創建されたと伝えられる。戦国時代には斎藤龍興が入寺し中興開山となったという伝説がある。江戸時代初期には布市藩や富山藩の保護を受け、加賀藩主や富山藩主の位牌を安置した。
