Originally serving as the Kokubun Ichinomiya, the head shrine for the thirty-three villages of Kokubun-so, it was revered as the Ujiko Isshu-san (patron deity of the parishioners) during the Enryaku era. In 1189 (Bunji 5), the shrine buildings were constructed by Minamoto no Yoritomo to pray for victory in battle. The shrine was relocated to its current site in 1457 (Kohei 3). In 1635 (Kan'ei 12), Date Masamune oversaw the reconstruction of the main hall, completing the primary structures that stand today.
