Kokujouji
〒959-0136 新潟県燕市国上1407
A temple of the Shugyō-ryū branch of Shingon Buddhism located in Jōetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. It is also known as a temple associated with the poet-monk Ryōkan (specifically the Gōgō-an hermitage) and as a prayer temple for the Sengoku-era warlord Uesugi Kenshin.
History
Founded in 709 CE by the monk Taishō. During the Sengoku period, Uesugi Kenshin developed the site into a complex of seven halls (shichidō-garan). The complex was later destroyed by fire during warfare and was revived in the mid-Edo period by the monk Gen'en.
