The founding of the shrine dates back to the Tokushi era (1306-1307 CE). According to tradition, Hōjō Saginotaro Nyūdō Nariganen established the shrine site following a divine dream. During the Edo period, a deity statue and a sutra box were discovered. In the Meiji period, it was designated as a village shrine. There is also a legend concerning Lady Tokiwa, a concubine of Kira Tsunehiro, the lord of Setagaya Castle. Her spirit is enshrined as Benzaiten (Goddess of Arts and Wisdom), and the son she gave birth to is enshrined as Wakamiya Hachiman (Young Hachiman).
