It is said that in 737 CE, the monk Gyoki carved a statue of Kannon and established a single hall, making him the founder. In the Edo period, it received land grants (shuin-chi) from successive Shoguns of the Tokugawa shogunate and gained devotion as the 14th station of the 33 Kannon Pilgrimage of the Kanto region. During the Meiji period, the temple lost its lands and treasures due to the impact of the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement. However, in 1901, Watanabe Kengyoku became the abbot and devoted himself to its restoration.
