Kongo Zenji (Kongo Zenji Temple)

Founded during the Daiho era as a shrine dedicated to the koto and boat seen by Nichijo, a Hosso sect monk, while he was in training on Mount Kotozuru. In the second year of the Doto era (807 CE), Kukai entered the mountain, carved an image of the Holy Kannon Bodhisattva to serve as the main deity, and buried seven treasures to consecrate the ground, leading to the name change to Shippo-san Kannonji (Seven Treasures Mountain Kannon Temple). It later became an imperial prayer site for three successive emperors, beginning with Emperor Kanmu, and flourished during the Muromachi period when Doshun, a son of Ashikaga Takauji, served as the abbot.
