The temple is believed to have originated during the Tensho period as a dojo for negotiations between Oda Nobunaga and the Ise Grand Shrine regarding the Battle of Ishiyama Hongan-ji. In 1602 CE (Keicho 7), it was reorganized as Mugai-chi-zan Daito-ji with Chonin as its founding abbot. It relocated to its current site in 1606 CE (Keicho 11). In 1639 CE (Kan'ei 16), Senjō was appointed as the abbot, and with the support of the Himeji Domain, the temple grounds were expanded, and it was designated as a special branch temple.
