It is said to have been founded during the Bunji era of the Kamakura period. Its origins are attributed to Hojo Masako, who erected a statue of Shokannon (Avalokiteshvara) to pray for the long-lasting martial fortune of her husband. In 1652, a standing statue of Shokannon was excavated, and new feet were cast for it before it was enshrined again. In 1907, Akagi Shrine and Kumano Shrine were merged into this shrine by government decree.
