Founded in 1669 CE (Kanbun 9) by Giyō, it was initially named Seimei-an and served as a training ground for the study of four different schools. After being destroyed by fire in 1701 CE (Genroku 14), it was rebuilt in 1716 CE (Hōei 3) by Jigen-in-dono, the birth mother of Prince Kuni-naga of the Fushimi-no-miya house, and renamed Kosei-ji.
