Koseiji Temple's Niomon (King of Heaven Gate)

Founded in 739 CE (Tenpyo 11) by the monk Kibi no Makibi (commonly known as Kibi or Kibi no Makibi, but in this context likely referring to the monk Kibi or a specific figure, standard translation for Kibi is Kibi) as Shogaji Temple during the Nara period. In the early Heian period, Kukai relocated the temple to its current site and enshrined a statue of Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva). During the Kamakura period, Kosei Sagin revived the temple and renamed it Koseiji Temple. In the Edo period, Matsudaira Yorishige organized the temple complex and changed the name to Betsugaku Honzan Koseiji (Special Head Temple Koseiji).
