1620年（元和6年）、水野家の家臣・木村八太夫光政が智善院日鳳聖人を迎えて当地に移転再建した。京都本山妙覚寺の末寺であり、福山藩主水野家の家臣によって護持されてきた。第二次世界大戦の空襲で焼失したが、戦後速やかに再建され、1992年には開山聖人の350遠忌記念事業として本堂の大改修と庫裡の新築が行われた。
