Originally a sub-temple (wakamonnin) of Nishi Hongan-ji, it became independent as the head temple of the Shinshū Kōshō-ha in 1876. Various theories exist regarding its origins, including the hypothesis that Shinran returned to Kyoto to establish it, and the origin of its name based on an imperial edict granted by Emperor Go-Daigo. In 1481 (Bunmei 13), the 14th abbot, Keigō, merged with the Hongan-ji sect and established a new Koshō-ji in Yamashina.
