The place name was derived from the phrase 'Kouri Jorai' (promoting profit and eliminating harm) found in the book Guanzi, based on a proposal by the Confucian scholar Ohara Baipo in 1822 (Bunsei 5). In 1832 (Tenpo 3), a portion of the divine spirit was transferred from the Yoshida Shikibu in Kyoto and enshrined here. The current main hall (honden) was rebuilt in 1878 (Meiji 11).
