This shrine enshrines Amaterasu-Omikami, the ancestral deity of the Imperial House and the sun goddess. As the main enshrined deity of Naiku (Inner Shrine) of Ise Jingu, she is regarded as the head patron deity for national peace and good fortune.

Located within the grounds of Nagao Tenmangu, the shrine is found at the top of a long flight of stairs along the approach path. Next to the torii gate stands the clothing mound of Sugawara no Michizane, offering a place where visitors can feel close to the revered figure. To the right of the shrine is the entrance to the hiking trail up Mount Takazuka.
