Kotokuin Temple (Kamakura Daibutsu-den)

A Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple located in Hase, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its formal name is Daiiso-san Kotokuin Seijo-en-ji. The principal image is a National Treasure, a bronze seated statue of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), affectionately known as the "Kamakura Daibutsu" (Great Buddha of Kamakura), with a height of approximately 11.3 meters. According to the Azumagami (a historical chronicle), construction of the Daibutsu-do (Great Buddha Hall) began in 1238 CE (Kareki 1) through the efforts of the monk Jogo. The creation of the gilt-bronze statue of Amida Nyorai commenced around 1252 CE (Kencho 4). The Great Buddha Hall collapsed and was washed away due to violent storms in 1335 CE (Kenmu 2) and 1369 CE (Ouan 2), as well as a tsunami during the Meicho era. Since the Muromachi period, the statue has stood open to the sky as the "Roza no Daibutsu" (Great Buddha in the Open Air), becoming a symbolic icon of Kamakura. In the mid-Edo period, the monk Yutenko revitalized the temple, and it was restored to its current status as a Jodo-shu temple.
History
This Jodo-shu temple enshrines the "Kamakura Daibutsu," a bronze seated statue of Amida Nyorai approximately 11.3 meters tall, as its principal image. Constructed in the mid-13th century, the original Great Buddha Hall was lost, leaving the statue exposed to the elements.

Visitors can view the massive Great Buddha up close as it stands outdoors, and can observe the internal structure through the Tai-nai Haikan (viewing of the interior cavity). The changing scenery across the four seasons and the giant straw sandals are also highlights. Goshuin (shrine/temple seal stamps) are available, and souvenir shops are scattered in the surrounding area. The site is often very lively and tends to be crowded.
