The founding abbot (Kaizan) was Yamazumi Chizon, the sixth generation of Seigenin in Mita Village, Aika District. The temple was renamed Kotokuji during the Keicho era; for the approximately 100 years prior, it was known as Shutokuin, and its principal image (Honzon) was Shō Kan'on (the Correctly Observing Bodhisattva). A fire in the second year of the Bunju era (1864 CE) destroyed all treasures, past registers, and other records.
