Founded in 1596 CE (Keicho 1) by Satake Yoshimitsu as his memorial temple, inviting Shunrin Zendo, the ninth generation of Mukagawa-ji, to establish it. During the Edo period, it was renamed Kousenji by the Satake clan. It was later relocated to its current site following the transfer of Chogenji, the memorial temple of Torii Munetada. The temple was completely destroyed in the Great Fire of Southern Yamagata City in 1894 CE (Meiji 27), but the main hall was rebuilt in 1913 CE (Taisho 2).
