It is said that the shrine was founded in 862 CE (Sagan 4) when Saka-no-Katamichi enshrined Gozu Tenno (Susanoo-no-Mikoto) and established Gion Shrine. In 1190 CE (Kenkyu 1), Kumano Shomei Gongen was enshrined. In 1321 CE (Genko 1), by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Daigo, it was designated as the head shrine of Kumano Gongen. In 1513 CE (Eicho 10), the current Second and Third Main Halls were constructed. These structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties as the oldest extant wooden buildings in Osaka city.
