A temple of the Shononji branch of the Shingon sect, serving as the 74th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. It is known as Mount Iyo (Medicine King Mountain) and bears the temple name Takaho-in. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha).
History
According to tradition, it was founded in 821 CE (Kōnin 12) by Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai). It is said that Kūkai carved an image of Yakushi Nyorai and performed rituals at this site during the construction of the Mano-ike reservoir. Using part of the funds granted by the imperial court in recognition of his achievements, he built the hall. The temple fell into ruin due to war fires during the Tenshō period, but was restored to its current form with the reconstruction of the main hall in 1735 CE (Kyōhō 20) and the Daishi Hall in 1742 CE (Kanpō 2).
