Kumagiji Temple, 8th Pilgrimage Site of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

日本、〒771-1506 徳島県阿波市土成町土成前田185

4.2(718)

A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, this is the 8th site of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. It is also famous as a cherry blossom spot. On the 18th of every month, the main statue, the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, is illuminated by lights.

History

According to tradition, in 815 CE (Kounin 6), Kukai received a divine revelation from Hi-taki Gongen of Kumano while in training and was granted a golden statue of Kannon. He then built a hall and carved a life-sized statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva from a sacred tree to serve as the main image. The main statue was lost in a fire in 1927, but a newly created main statue was consecrated in the main hall, which was rebuilt in 1971.

The Taho Pagoda is a highlight, featuring distinctive and innovative color schemes with intricate carvings and polychrome details. The parking lot is located on the south side, and the registration office accepts Goshuin (a temple's calligraphic seal stamp) requests and parking fee payments.
