The shrine originated in 1869 when Hosokawa Shohko and Hosokawa Mamoru established a Rekotsusha (Soul-Calling Shrine) on Mt. Hanakaya to honor samurai who died during the Meiji Restoration. In 1939, it was designated as the Kumamoto Ken Kokugai Jinja by the Minister of Home Affairs. In 1958, the shrine was relocated and completed at its current site, the former location of the Tojosaki-dai Rekotsujo. In 1959, it was added to the list of Jisha Hocho (Association of Shinto Shrines) affiliated shrines.
