Shrine tradition holds that it was rebuilt in 806 CE (Dōtō 1) by imperial decree of Emperor Heisei, receiving the enshrined deity of Kumano Gongen from Kii Province. There is also a theory that it was founded by Taira no Munechika in the late Heian period. It became an imperial prayer site (chōgansho) when Emperor Go-Hakuraku was enthroned and ordered prayers for the peace of the realm. It was designated a village shrine (kyōsha) in 1892 (Meiji 5) and a prefectural shrine (kengisha) in 1917 (Taishō 6).
