History

After Prince Tachihiko, a son of Emperor Mutsumi, invited the deity Kumano Gongen to this site, the shrine was destroyed by fire due to disaster but was rebuilt in 931 CE (Jōhei 2). It later became the shrine estate of the New Kumano Shrine under Emperor Toba and served as the head shrine for the guardian deities of 21 villages. During the era of Tsuchiya Yasutada, the shrine incorporated Tenjin worship and a Hachiman shrine, and the current Kumano Shrine was constructed on its present site.
