During the medieval period, influenced by Kumano faith, it was divided into 'Kami no Miya' (Upper Shrine) and 'Shimo no Miya' (Lower Shrine). These were merged into the Lower Shrine during the shrine mergers of the Meiji era. In 1977, the shrine was renamed Kumano Taisha (Kumano Grand Shrine), restoring its ancient name.
