History
The shrine's history began in 1160 CE (Eiryaku 1) when Emperor Go-Shirakawa enshrined Kumano Gongen as the tutelary deity of Zenrin-ji Temple. Although it fell into ruin during the Onin War, it was restored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Repairs were carried out during the Meiji era, and the main hall (honden) now houses a single shrine with a side altar (issha-souden).
