This Shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki codex) was founded before 1200 CE. It is believed to have originated as a Shumeigū (divine palace) where the placenta of Mibiko-no-Ouji (Prince Mibiko), son of Emperor Keitai, was buried. In 1576 CE, it was relocated to its current site in connection with the construction of Maruoka Castle. Since then, it has received protection and donations from successive lords of Maruoka Castle. The shrine collapsed and burned down in the 1948 Fukui Great Earthquake but was rebuilt in 1962.
