A Shingon-Buison-ha sect temple located in Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kusatsu-zan. It is known as the 44th station of the Kanto Yakushi Reijo (Kanto Yakushi Pilgrimage Circuit).
History
In 721 CE, the monk Giki founded the Yakushi-do (Medicine Hall). In 1200 CE, the Yumoto clan rebuilt it as the Betto-ji (administrative temple) of Shirane Myojin (Shirane Shrine). The Kamakura Shogunate appointed the temple as Jito (local magistrate). During the Nanboku-cho period (Northern and Southern Courts), the temple sided with the Southern Court and led a force of Sobo (monk-soldiers). In 1481 CE, it became a Chokugan-ji (temple under imperial patronage), receiving an imperial plaque from Emperor Go-Hanazono and a calligraphic work by Emperor Kashiwabara.
