History
Tradition holds that the shrine was founded in 709 CE (Wadō 2). Its origins are based on a legend that Ōkuninushi-no-mikoto (the deity Ōkuninushi) used a hoe to excavate the Hojo Gorge, developing the basin, and that the hoes used were piled up to form a mountain. In 1609 CE (Keichō 14), Okabe Nagamori constructed a new shrine building on the current site. The shrine's festival was revived in 1681 CE (Enpō 9). It was designated a Gōsha (provincial shrine) in 1873 CE (Meiji 6) and elevated to a Fusha (prefectural shrine) in 1928 CE (Shōwa 3).
