Founded in January 1879 (Meiji 12) out of the longing of former domain retainers and residents for the Sakai family, it was established to enshrine Sakai Masachika. In 1925 (Taisho 14), the current site, which was government-owned land within Himeji Castle, was purchased, and the deities were transferred there in June 1927 (Showa 2). In 1961 (Showa 36), the successive lords of the Sakai family were also enshrined.
