History
It is said that descendants of Ariwara no Narihira enshrined the kami during the Jogan era, and it may have been invited as the Ueno Province Government Hachimangu. The shrine suffered from military fires in 1567 (Eiroku 10), but donation documents from the lords of Maebashi Castle dating from the Sengoku period through the Edo period remain. Although the shrine buildings were completely destroyed in the Maebashi air raid of 1945 (Showa 20), a ginkgo tree beside the structures survived without dying.
