When the Fujiwara clan founded Kasuga Taisha, they enshrined branch spirits (bunrei) of Amateru-no-Mikoto and Himegami from this shrine, leading to its alternative name 'Moto-Kasuga' (Original Kasuga). During the Heian period, the shrine attained the highest divine rank of Sho-i and the third class of merit. From the medieval period onward, it was revered as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Kawachi Province.
