Main Hall of Taishaku-ji Temple
香美町香住区下浜597
A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Kameyacho, Hyogo Prefecture, known for its connection to the artist Maruyama Okyo. It is also the 28th stop on the Saigoku Yakushi 49 Pilgrimage.
History
Legend states that the temple was founded in 745 CE (Tenpyo 17) by the monk Gyoki, who enshrined a self-carved statue of Kannon Bodhisattva as the main deity. Although the temple declined during periods of war, it was revived in the late Edo period during the Kansei era (1789–1800) by the abbot Mitsuzo and others. As a temple associated with Maruyama Okyo, Okyo and his disciples created many screen paintings to express gratitude to Mitsuzo.
