Makamikoji Temple
〒793-0053 愛媛県西条市洲之内甲1426
Located at the foot of Mount Ishizuchi, this is the head temple of the Sekko sect of Shingon Buddhism and also serves as the 64th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
History
The temple is said to have been founded when En no Gyohaku, during his ascetic practices on Mount Ishizuchi, attained enlightenment of Shoujō Kongō Gongen (a manifestation of the deity) and carved an image of the deity to enshrine it. Later, Ishisen built a hall, and following the fulfillment of a prayer for the recovery of Emperor Kanmu's illness, the temple was granted the title of Imperially Commissioned Temple and the name 'Kinshoin Makamikoji' (Golden Court Makamikoji). Although it was once closed during the Meiji era due to the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism edict, it was later revived and became the head temple of the Sekko sect of Shingon Buddhism.

What visitors say
The temple grounds feature a Daishi Hall, and at the far end, up a set of stairs, stands the main hall with a solemn atmosphere reminiscent of a shrine. The mountain gate features rare Komainu (lion-dog statues), and a unique custom involves throwing small coins at the rocks surrounding the Nio statues that are depicted performing waterfall asceticism. There are two parking areas, and the temple grounds in the early morning are enveloped in a mystical atmosphere.
