It is said to have been founded in 1282 CE (Kōan 5) by the Venerable Kōun. The temple received a land grant seal from Tokugawa Ieyasu, but the property was destroyed by fire in 1711 CE (Kan'ei 18). A new grant was received in 1685 CE (Jōkyō 2). During the Meiji Restoration, the temple was relocated from Ōmiya Hikawa Shrine's Besshin Kannonji, and its main deity was enshrined here as a subsidiary deity.
