A Tendai sect temple located in Himeji City, with the mountain name Masuizayama. It is designated as the 4th station of the Harima Saigoku 33 Temple Pilgrimage and the 15th station of the Harima Yakushi Spiritual Pilgrimage.
History
The temple is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku as Masuiji, and later revived by the monk Kibi no Makibi. In 834 CE (Jowa 1), it was converted to a Tendai temple by imperial decree of Emperor Ninmyo. In 849 CE (Kajō 2), it was granted the name Suigannonji. Although the entire mountain complex was destroyed by fire at the end of the medieval period, it was rebuilt on the original site in 1586 CE (Tenshō 14). The current main hall was reconstructed in 1666 CE (Kanbun 6) by Sakakibara Tadetsugu.
