The shrine is considered a branch (kanjo) of Usa Jingu (Usa Grand Shrine). During the Heian period, Matsubara Sho (Matsubara Estate) became a shrine estate (sharyo) of Ishizumi Hachiman Jingu (Ishizumi Hachiman Grand Shrine), and this shrine served as its sub-shrine (betsugu). In the spring of the 10th year of the Kōan era (1287 CE), the monk Ippen visited the shrine and presented the 'Betsugan Wazan' (Verses of Separate Vows) to his followers.
