History
Founded during the Anwa era enshrining Sakanoue no Tamuramaro as a war deity, it served as the founding shrine of the Yamamoto district. It later came under the jurisdiction of Matsuo Taisha (Matsuo Grand Shrine), where Oyamatsumi (the deity who split the great mountain) was invited. After being destroyed by fire, it was relocated to its current site and renamed Matsuo Shrine. The current main hall (honden), rebuilt in 1671 CE (Kanbun 11), is designated as a municipal cultural property.
