History
Founded in 842 CE (Chōwa 9) by the Great Master Chishō Enchin, it became an imperial temple by decree of Emperor Saga. It was relocated several times to avoid wars and fires, moving to its current location in 1608 CE (Keichō 13). It received the patronage of Tokugawa Ienari and became the guardian temple of the Kii Domain. The main hall is designated as a Special Protected Building, equivalent to an Important Cultural Property.
