Meiseirinji Temple on Kinseizan
〒503-2213 岐阜県大垣市赤坂町4610
A Shingon Buddhist temple located on Kinseizan, it is counted as one of the Three Great Kongōzō temples in Japan and is also the 31st station of the Nishi-Mino 33 Pilgrimage.
History
According to tradition, the temple was founded in 686 CE by En no Gyōkaku by imperial decree of Empress Jitō, and construction was completed two years later. In 801 CE during the Heian period, Kūkai revived the temple and converted it to the Shingon sect. After subsequent destruction by lightning strikes and reconstruction with the support of the feudal lord, the current main hall was established.

What visitors say
Located on a high plateau near the summit, the temple is characterized by the surrounding strange rocks and a landscape resembling a rock labyrinth. The main hall features extremely elaborate tile decorations, and visitors are free to worship in the inner sanctum. The mountain paths and slopes have steep sections, so physical stamina is required, but the observation deck offers a wonderful view overlooking the surrounding mountains.
