Mejiro Fudo Myojin (Mejiro Fudo Shrine)
目黒区下目黒3丁目20
A Tendai sect temple enshrining Fudo Myoo (the Immovable Wisdom King) as its principal deity. Long known as Mejiro Fudo Myojin, it is one of the Three Great Fudo of the Edo period and is also counted among the Edo Five-Color Fudo and the Kanto 36 Fudo pilgrimage sites.
History
According to tradition, the temple was founded in 808 CE when Ennin carved a statue of Fudo Myoo based on a divine figure he saw in a dream. Later, Emperor Saga bestowed the imperial title 'Tai-ei' (Great Wisdom), which became the temple's mountain name. In 1630 CE (Kan'ei 7), by order of Tenkai, it became a branch temple of Tōei-kan'ei-ji and, under the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu, its magnificent complex was restored.
