According to shrine tradition, it was originally called San'ō Shrine and was established approximately 350 years ago through invitation of the deity. It is said that during the Ansei era, when river improvements were made and wasteland was reclaimed, Ooyama-kuzan-no-mikoto was revered for his strong divine powers in civil engineering. In 1919 CE (Taishō 8), it was designated as a shrine for the offering of sacred food and silk (shinsen heiha-ryō).
